Philemon 1:1-25

Summary

Onesimus is a runaway slave who comes to Christ through Paul's ministry. Onesimus has decided to return to his old master (Philemon) and carries this letter from Paul. Paul makes a strong case for Philemon to treat Onesimus as a brother in Christ and set him free. The Bible's view of slavery is contrasted with Rome's cultural view at the time. Analysis is made of how Paul presents his relational argument to Philemon. Paul focuses on developing conviction instead of creating compliance in Philemon.
