Jesus' famous Sermon on the Mount begins with his prescription for true happiness - the Beatitudes. He speaks with authority as God's King, and his teaching is that the key to happiness is first coming into a relationship with God and then adopting certain attitudes in line with knowing God personally. Our happiness as people is not dependent on our circumstances but rather on our cultivation of these attitudes.

?How can I gain entry into God's kingdom?? This age-old question has two answers from Jesus Himself. The first answer, or Plan A, is to earn one's way into heaven by fulfilling God's Law perfectly, a worldview that Jesus' audience held dearly and that most still hold today. The second answer, or Plan B, is to let Jesus earn one's way in by His perfect fulfillment of God's Law, and although this answer is offensive, it provides true hope through the promise of the Holy Spirit.

Contrary to popular opinion, God is not opposed to humans seeking treasure. Jesus does, however, advise seeking the correct treasure - eternal riches, like other people and praise from God, that will never be destroyed. Earthly riches are not secure, and an excessive focus on accumulating material wealth will lead to serving money, not God. Jesus wants to give us fulfilling lives that are free from the entrapment of wealth, and laying up treasure in heaven is a guaranteed sound investment strategy in a transitory world.

It is important for all Christians to develop a personal, private spirituality with God, and Jesus models that kind of spirituality through the Lord's Prayer. The Lord's Prayer provides a valuable framework for private prayer while also emphasizing three important truths: 1) God is our loving Father and we are his children; 2) God is our rightful King and we are His servants; and 3) God is our Provider and we are dependent on Him daily. We as Christians can pray along these lines daily and as a result develop a deep personal relationship with God.

Jesus invites us to live a worry-free life through exercising faith in his promises about our material possessions.This kind of faith has three roles in the lives of believers: 1) it argues with our anxious thoughts in light of what God says; 2) it actively seeks God's kingdom and righteousness; and 3) it focuses on the present instead of the future. Developing this faith is the key to a more anxiety-free life, and it's clear from the Bible that God is our Father who promises to take care of us in this life and the next.\r\n

Each person has a choice between what Jesus calls the ?narrow way? and the ?broad way,? and each route has its own ramifications for how people will live now and where they will spend eternity. Jesus says that most people will choose the broad way because of the influence of false teachers, but he also gives criteria for our evaluation of such teachers and encourages his hearers to act on his truthful teachings instead.

The Golden Rule, as taught by Jesus, is to treat others the way that we would want to be treated. It's clear from the rest of Sermon on the Mount, however, that God's priority for Christians is not simply following a rule but rather to develop healthy relationships in multiple facets. Jesus gives four supplementary principles for healthy relating: 1) do not view others with a critical spirit ; 2) resolve conflict with an attitude of humility; 3) relate to fools in a wise way; and 4) ask for God's enabling power in relating to others. By applying these principles to their personal relationships, believers can be a light to the world and more effective examples of God's love.
